Project: Grain cultivation

In most of the African semi-arid areas, precipitation decreased during the last decades. In an area with chronic malnutrition, small scale farmers are assisted with drought resistant millet seeds.

A credit system using “seed banks” liberates farmers from the dependency on traders. Trainings in soil cultivation and seed multiplication help to use the little precipitation more effectively. Simple granaries minimize post-harvest losses due to pests and enable the farmers to wait for the best time to sell their grain surplus.

The achieved improvements enable the farmers also to experiment with other drought tolerant grain varieties; the project supports such initiatives as well.
